Reptile Awareness Day

Reptile hibernacula

Happy reptile awareness day! Mindenhurst is home to a variety of reptile life, including Slow Worms, Common Lizards, and Grass Snakes!

We look out for these reptiles by setting up log piles like this for them to hibernate in or by rehoming them, ensuring they remain safe while works take place.

Mindenhurst team achieves “outstanding” rating for Considerate Construction

The Mindenhurst team has received an outstanding rating following the most recent site inspection carried out by assessors from the nationally recognised Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

Assessment staff from the CCS attended on 6th September to review the approach being taken at the Mindenhurst construction site.

The assessors reviewed the project for three key factors:  respect for the community, care for the environment and valuing the site’s workforce.  Under all three categories the project received the maximum score of 15, providing a total score of 45 out of 45, the maximum possible score for the three areas of assessment, enough for an ‘Excellent’ rating.

In addition, two extra points were awarded for the project’s Wild Week environmental engagement with the local community and new Neurodiversity staff training.

This resulted in an overall score of 47 out of the maximum possible award of 50 points and the ‘Outstanding’ rating being achieved by the project for the first time ever.

We are pleased by this recognition following steadily improved scoring in the 6 monthly CCS assessments over recent years, increasing from a Very Good rating in 2017 and 2018 and Excellent between 2019 and 2021.

The achievement of the Outstanding score reflects the project’s longstanding commitment to place the community foremost and value its hardworking site staff. Commenting on the recent work by Mindenhurst, September’s CCS assessment report stated:

“The site continues to leave an excellent impression of the industry and aims of the scheme. The Company is to be commended on their Net Zero commitment on carbon and the project team have clearly involved the local community and encourage them to contribute and help enrich their natural environment. Impressive promotion of environmental issues has taken place with Wild Week“.

Wild Week celebrated the local environment and wildlife and included fun and informative events for all ages within the community. There were two Bat Walks lead by Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) through the local woodland using bat detectors to hear their calls. SWT also held a Wildlife Talk where they discussed the wide variety of animals living in the area. There were also multiple Minibeast Hunts for children, a Wild Photography Competition, a community Butterfly Survey, Tree Trail, and promotion of the Hedgehog Street charity.

The report also commended the in-depth study and promotion of Neurodiversity related to diversity and inclusion.  As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of our workforce, our Senior Construction Manager gives regular presentations to the site operations staff, senior leadership team and the wider business on the subjects of Stress at Work and Neurodiversity.  The Construction Industry typically benefits from a high proportion of people with neurodiversities, so we have invested time in celebrating, raising awareness, reducing the stigma, and opening up the conversation on how these individuals benefit the workplace with their diverse thinking. The presentations highlight to Managers the adjustments that can be made in the workplace and the importance of adapting on-site training and instruction to recognise that not everyone is neurotypical.  We were delighted that this initiative was recognised as best practice by the Considerate Constructors Scheme in September, in addition we were awarded an ‘outstanding’ award for the first time at the Mindenhurst site.

Wildlife Photography Competition Winner

Surrey Heath’s Mayor, Councillor Helen Whitcroft, joined Mindenhurst’s monthly community drop-in at the project office on Wednesday 31st August to announce the winner of this year’s Wild Photography Competition.

The local wildlife competition was launched during Wild Week which saw a range of activities held across Mindenhurst. The competition was open to all residents living on or around the development site at Deepcut.

Local resident, Jurgita Valaitytė-Gulbiniene, captured the winning photograph which showed a deer peering through the grass. Jurgita was awarded a framed print of her photograph plus a National Trust voucher worth £40.

Mayor Helen Whitcroft said: “It was such a joy to see all the wonderful photographs of local wildlife which our talented community have taken, and I would like to thank everyone who took part. As the quality was very high, it was difficult to pick just one, however, I am very happy to announce that Jurgita Valaitytė-Gulbiniene is the winner of the Mindenhurst Wild Photography Competition ’22, with a striking photograph of a deer. I was immediately drawn to the image since they are so associated with our local green spaces. The soft focus in the foreground really draws your eye to the deer in the centre which is looking directly back at the viewer.”

Niki Dufour, Community Relations Manager at Mindenhurst, said: “The Wild Photography Competition is just one in a host of events we’ve been running this year to bring the community together and celebrate our beautiful surroundings. We were delighted by the enthusiastic response to the competition and the standard of the entries, residents can view this year’s standout entries and find out how to get involved in other events by visiting the Mindenhurst website or liking our Facebook page.”

Mindenhurst Wild Week Roundup 2022

Here is a roundup of the best bits from a full week of getting up close and personal with mother nature and the very special wildlife in Deepcut.

Wild Week kicked off with an insightful talk by Surrey Wildlife Trust who told residents about the different animals living in the area, how, where and when is best to spot them, and how to help local species survive and thrive. Surrey Wildlife Trust also led a bat walk later in the week, where the group got to see and hear Pipistrelle and Soprano bats as they flew overhead catching insects.

Families enjoyed taking part in a minibeast hunt, discovering all sorts of wonderful bugs and creatures that live in the Central SANG with expert assistance from Hannah O’Kelly, Environmental Advisor at Mindenhurst. For anyone who missed it, there will be a second hunt taking place on 24th August at 1pm on the Village Green.

The wildlife photography competition launched during Wild Week will be running until 24th August, details on how to take part can be found online here: mindenhurst.co.uk/events/wild-photography-competition

Thank you to everyone who took part, and to Surrey Wildlife Trust, for making it such a fascinating and fun experience.

For information on future events, visit: Mindenhurst.co.uk/events, @MindenhurstDeepcut on Facebook, or email a member of the team at hello@mindenhurst.co.uk

Planning Update

We are pleased to share that two significant planning applications were unanimously approved by Surrey Heath Borough Council on 4th August.

The planning approvals cover key pieces of site infrastructure, allowing us to embark on the next phase of development. A new Loop Road will be constructed through the heart of the former Princess Royal Barracks to facilitate future phases of new homes. In addition, proposals for the Blackdown Road Alternative Natural Green Space (ANGST) were approved, providing 5.7 hectares of woodland and open space for community use.

These applications were submitted following community consultation in 2021.
