Surrey Heathâs Mayor, Councillor Helen Whitcroft, joined Mindenhurstâs monthly community drop-in at the project office on Wednesday 31st August to announce the winner of this yearâs Wild Photography Competition.
The local wildlife competition was launched during Wild Week which saw a range of activities held across Mindenhurst. The competition was open to all residents living on or around the development site at Deepcut.
Local resident, Jurgita ValaitytÄ-Gulbiniene, captured the winning photograph which showed a deer peering through the grass. Jurgita was awarded a framed print of her photograph plus a National Trust voucher worth ÂŁ40.
Mayor Helen Whitcroft said: âIt was such a joy to see all the wonderful photographs of local wildlife which our talented community have taken, and I would like to thank everyone who took part. As the quality was very high, it was difficult to pick just one, however, I am very happy to announce that Jurgita ValaitytÄ-Gulbiniene is the winner of the Mindenhurst Wild Photography Competition â22, with a striking photograph of a deer. I was immediately drawn to the image since they are so associated with our local green spaces. The soft focus in the foreground really draws your eye to the deer in the centre which is looking directly back at the viewer.â
Niki Dufour, Community Relations Manager at Mindenhurst, said: âThe Wild Photography Competition is just one in a host of events weâve been running this year to bring the community together and celebrate our beautiful surroundings. We were delighted by the enthusiastic response to the competition and the standard of the entries, residents can view this yearâs standout entries and find out how to get involved in other events by visiting the Mindenhurst website or liking our Facebook page.â

Here is a roundup of the best bits from a full week of getting up close and personal with mother nature and the very special wildlife in Deepcut.
Wild Week kicked off with an insightful talk by Surrey Wildlife Trust who told residents about the different animals living in the area, how, where and when is best to spot them, and how to help local species survive and thrive. Surrey Wildlife Trust also led a bat walk later in the week, where the group got to see and hear Pipistrelle and Soprano bats as they flew overhead catching insects.
Families enjoyed taking part in a minibeast hunt, discovering all sorts of wonderful bugs and creatures that live in the Central SANG with expert assistance from Hannah OâKelly, Environmental Advisor at Mindenhurst. For anyone who missed it, there will be a second hunt taking place on 24th August at 1pm on the Village Green.
The wildlife photography competition launched during Wild Week will be running until 24th August, details on how to take part can be found online here: mindenhurst.co.uk/events/wild-photography-competition
Thank you to everyone who took part, and to Surrey Wildlife Trust, for making it such a fascinating and fun experience.

We are pleased to share that two significant planning applications were unanimously approved by Surrey Heath Borough Council on 4th August.
The planning approvals cover key pieces of site infrastructure, allowing us to embark on the next phase of development. A new Loop Road will be constructed through the heart of the former Princess Royal Barracks to facilitate future phases of new homes. In addition, proposals for the Blackdown Road Alternative Natural Green Space (ANGST) were approved, providing 5.7 hectares of woodland and open space for community use.
These applications were submitted following community consultation in 2021.
We are launching our Wild Photography Completion as part of Wild Week which celebrates our wonderful local nature and wildlife.
Practise your photography skills and capture a photograph of wildlife in Mindenhurst and Deepcut. Weather you photograph an insect, your dog enjoying a walk, or you are lucky enough to spot a deer, we would love to see them.
There will be an under 15s and over 15s category, with a ÂŁ25 National Trust voucher for each winner. The winners will also be presented with a framed print of their photograph.

To celebrate the Queenâs Platinum Jubilee people across the UK are being invited to plant trees in an initiative called âThe Queenâs Green Canopyâ.
To support our local environment and to honour the monarchâs 70-year reign we will be giving away 70 trees during the year to local residents, schools and community groups.
To apply for a free tree please click below and complete the application form.
If you are one of the first 70 people to apply, we will be in touch to find the right species of tree for the space you have available.
Trees will be delivered from a certified nursery at the start of the tree planting season in October.

A recent full play safety inspection of the Blackdown play area has been undertaken by ROSPA.
Based on the recommendations highlighted in this report the current landowner has requested us to take some items out of service until such time as they can arrange for the remedial works to be undertaken.
We update this post when we know when these repairs are likely to take place.
