Mindenhurst donates spindle tree to Lakeview Care Home to mark late Queen’s Jubilee

On Wednesday 1st February the Mindenhurst team and Surrey Wildlife Trust joined residents and staff at Lakeview Care Home to plant a spindle tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

On Wednesday 1st February the Mindenhurst team and Surrey Wildlife Trust joined residents and staff at Lakeview Care Home to plant a spindle tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

The Queen’s Green Canopy was created during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, with the aim of planting a million trees to create a living legacy in Her Majesty’s name.

In support of the local environment at Deepcut, the Mindenhurst development has participated in this initiative by donating trees to local families, groups and businesses as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service to her country and her people.

Lakeview Care Home residents and staff were joined by the Mindenhurst team’s Operations Director and Surrey Wildlife Trust, who delivered a talk about our local wildlife and the importance of trees in urban environments.

Every new tree planted will bring benefits for people, wildlife, and the climate. The spindle tree donated to the care home will become a beautiful addition to the gardens.

In the spring and summer it will provide a welcome habitat for garden birds and – when it flowers – it will bring colour to the garden and a rich source of nectar and pollen for insects. Each autumn the tree will go through a striking transformation, when clusters of bright pink-and-orange berries hang from its twigs providing food for mice, birds, and even red foxes.

Charlie Norris, Operations Director at Skanska, said: “The Mindenhurst project team is delighted to join residents of Lakeview Care Home to plant a tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy. This is one of many trees we are proudly donating to the community to support our local environment, so far over a million trees have been planted by people across the country, as a wonderful tribute to Her Majesty.”

Inder Hanzra, General Manager at Lakeview Care Home, said: “We are delighted that the Mindenhurst team has very kindly donated the spindle tree to Lakeview for the enjoyment of the residents, their families and friends, and the Lakeview team as a living legacy in the name of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”.

Louise Ryan, Senior Ecologist at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: “Surrey Wildlife Trust’s mission is to ensure that reserves are connected through a ‘Nature Recovery Network’ of joined up spaces that are havens for wildlife. This means ensuring our towns, villages, businesses, farms, schools, homes, gardens and all the other elements that make up our living landscape are managed with nature in mind. This includes increasing the number of urban trees planted within urban developments, as they provide valuable habitat to a range of wildlife from mammals, birds, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles. In addition, they provide important ecosystem services through carbon sequestration and flood management. They have also been proven to improve many peoples overall mental health and wellbeing. The Queen’s Green Canopy will contribute significantly towards the number of urban trees to ensure the UK’s wildlife is protected for the long term”.

Construction Update February 2023

Screenshot 2023-02-02 151515
  1. Demolition works at the old fuel depot in the Southern SANGs are ongoing. We started crushing material on the 30th January so there may be additional noise in this area for the next few weeks – we will continue to monitor noise during these works and, if needed, we will use sound barriers to manage noise levels.
  2. Construction works will be continuing on the Loop Road, we expect there may be some additional traffic to Brunswick Road to facilitate deliveries to site.
  3. External refurbishment works will be continuing on St. Barbara’s Church. The Church has been stripped of its old coating whilst repairs to the roofing, cladding and timber work are well underway.
  4. Soft landscaping maintenance will be continuing on the Village Green, Central SANGs and Green Swathe.

Works to Upgrade Electrical Infrastructure

Over the coming months, work will be carried out to upgrade the electrical infrastructure in Deepcut and Mindenhurst to increase the capacity of the network.

This work is necessary to comply with Government changes in legislation, which requires the provision of fast electric vehicle (EV) charging. Unfortunately the current electrical network didn’t have the capacity to supply this type of charging therefore the network will be upgraded from the primary substation in Farnborough. Once complete the extra capacity will enable us to provide fast EV charging, not only in new homes, but also extra charging points located in the public car parks at St Barbara’s Church and the new sport hub.

The work is being carried out by Blu-3, who will have two teams working over an 8 month period to install new power cables along the 5.5km route from Farnborough to Deepcut. Their teams will be working Mon-Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, and the route they will follow is shown on the map below.

Blu-3 will be carrying out letter drops to notify residents of works affecting their homes or premises. They are also attending the next two community drop-in sessions so that they can answer questions from local residents. The dates for these sessions are below:

  • Wednesday 25th January, 10am-12pm
  • Wednesday 22nd February, 5pm-7pm

If you have any questions regarding this work, please contact us at hello@mindenhurst.co.uk or Blue-3 at hello@blu-3.co.uk.

Following Hannah Series Roundup

Over the past few months we have been following Hannah, our Environmental Advisor, to see what environmental work in the construction industry really means. Hannah carries out a wide variety of jobs across Mindenhurst to support local wildlife to survive and thrive, no two days are the same and here is a sneak peak into the life of an Environmental Advisor:

badger

Hannah is responsible for monitoring animals and wildlife on site to ensure we keep track of how our works affect our environment and, where possible, reduce our impact.

We kicked off the series by taking a look at the night vision camera footage which records the activities of badgers on site and shared what we found.

Hannah transporting bat

Next Hannah and a trained ecologist from Surrey Wildlife Trust rehomed a bat to one of our purpose-built bat barns – it had been living in a building which is going to be demolished and needed help to make the journey. The bat was tucked inside a special fleece which Hannah kept warm inside her jacket.

Hannah also shared with that we have one large bat barn and 142 bat boxes around the site.

Checking reptile mat

Next up Hannah took us on one of her regular reptile surveys and explained how, where needed, she relocates reptiles to a different part of Mindenhurst that meets their habitat needs. Here she is checking reptile mats for any signs of our cold-blooded neighbours!

Hannah showed us round the recycling area, explained how materials are separated and showed us that some materials from the demolitions are even reused for construction on site.

Hannah carefully monitors the amount of waste produced each month, keeping track of our progress and helping us hit our target to divert 99% of our construction waste from landfill to be reused or recycled.

Finally, Hannah shared one of the highlights of working with Skanska since she joined. As part of her work on our Junior Leadership Team, she had the opportunity to visit our Building Team in New York.

It was a great opportunity to learn all about the work we do in the US, and a chance for the two teams to share knowledge and learn from one another.

Hannah delivered a presentation on how at our team looks after staff’s mental health, sharing the work our mental health ambassadors do on a daily basis and the training we provide to our staff – this talk was part of an initiative to share our leading mental health awareness scheme.

The group had a jam packed visit, including visits to the Penn Station upgrade works and Moynihan Train Hall, St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church which sits on the 9/11 memorial campus, North Shore University Hospital, the upgraded Empire State Guest Experience, and The Oculus.
