Mindenhurst Wild Week Roundup 2022

Here is a roundup of the best bits from a full week of getting up close and personal with mother nature and the very special wildlife in Deepcut.

Wild Week kicked off with an insightful talk by Surrey Wildlife Trust who told residents about the different animals living in the area, how, where and when is best to spot them, and how to help local species survive and thrive. Surrey Wildlife Trust also led a bat walk later in the week, where the group got to see and hear Pipistrelle and Soprano bats as they flew overhead catching insects.

Families enjoyed taking part in a minibeast hunt, discovering all sorts of wonderful bugs and creatures that live in the Central SANG with expert assistance from Hannah O’Kelly, Environmental Advisor at Mindenhurst. For anyone who missed it, there will be a second hunt taking place on 24th August at 1pm on the Village Green.

The wildlife photography competition launched during Wild Week will be running until 24th August, details on how to take part can be found online here: mindenhurst.co.uk/events/wild-photography-competition

Thank you to everyone who took part, and to Surrey Wildlife Trust, for making it such a fascinating and fun experience.

For information on future events, visit: Mindenhurst.co.uk/events, @MindenhurstDeepcut on Facebook, or email a member of the team at hello@mindenhurst.co.uk

Wild Week: Help The Hedgehogs

The British hedgehog is  classified as vulnerable to extinction however there are many ways that we can help and keep them a common and familiar part of British life.

The following suggestions are from ‘Hedgehog Street’ which is a fantastic charity and has loads of advice and resources: www.hedgehogstreet.org/get-involved.

Garden for Hedgehogs

Wildlife features like log piles, leaf piles, compost heaps and an undisturbed ‘wild patch’ will provide shelter and insect food for hedgehogs.

Let them in!

Give hedgehogs access to your garden with 13cm x 13cm square Hedgehog Highways in or under your fence, and encourage neighbours to do the same.

Make your Garden Safe

Remove hazards like litter, netting and chemicals, and check thoroughly before strimming and mowing. Ensure ponds have a sloped side or escape ramp for any hedgehogs that fall in.

Bed and Breakfast

Hedgehog houses can be bought online or built with our instructions. Supplementary food is also a great way to help – meaty cat or dog food and a shallow dish of water!

Log your sighting

If you are lucky enough to spot a hedgehog in the area, make sure that you log the sighting on the BIG Hedgehog Map.

This map helps to build a picture of hedgehog numbers and locations around the country.

Hedgehog Homes in the Central SANG

We have had a go at building hedgehog houses ourselves and have placed them in the Central SANG.

The basic design enables hedgehogs to enter and exit the box, but prevents larger mammals, such as cats, foxes and badgers from getting in.

Hopefully these will provide a safe home for them to sleep, hibernate, and nest throughout the year.

Random Act of Kindness

For ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on 17th February, Skanska is collecting donations for The Hope Hub to distribute to people who
need their support.

Some of the individuals they work with are in emergency accommodation and only have access to a kettle or microwave. The supplies they need the most are food which can be easily stored and heated. We have put together a list of items they would appreciate:

• ‘Just add water’ items e.g. pot noodles
• Meals in a tin / jar e.g. spaghetti hoops / chicken casserole
• Cereal bars
• Vegetables in a tin / jar
• Cereals
• Men’s deodorant
• Other toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, bodywash

If you are able to donate any of these items please bring them to Skanska’s Project Office, on Newfoundland Road, where there will be a donation box until February 17th.

November 11th

Remembrance Sunday

At 11am on Thursday 11th November, worksites across the development fell silent to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms.

The Skanska team, joined by Trade Contractors and project stakeholders, laid a wreath by the memorial at St Barbara’s Church to show our respect for the bravery and courage of those who fought for our country.
