Work Experience Blog

We’ve really loved hosting two Sixth Form students from Farnborough College for a week of work experience at the Mindenhurst development.

Throughout the week, they’ve explored different aspects of construction, sustainability, and project planning, and we’ve been really impressed by their curiosity and enthusiasm. Here’s their blog, capturing what they got up to each day and what they learned along the way.

Day 1 – First Impressions and Site Walks

We kicked off the week with an introduction to the Mindenhurst project. We learned about the infrastructure being built and how things like traffic, flooding, and environmental impact are all carefully planned. It was cool to see how much thought goes into making sure everything works well for the people who’ll live here.

After that, we went on a site walk and saw loads of different areas, including where the sports pitches will be and how drainage systems are set up. We also found out about a contaminated area that needs cleaning before any building can happen which is something we hadn’t really thought about before.

Later, we joined a meeting about modular buildings and design compliance. We talked about the Grenfell Tower fire and how it led to new rules that make sure designers and contractors are held responsible for safety. It was a serious topic, but really important to understand.

Day 2 – Safety, Snags, and Smart Design

We started the day learning about RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statements), permits, and how every day begins with a safety briefing. It was clear that safety is a massive priority on site.

In the afternoon, we visited the church and new church hall, where electrical work was being done. We saw how snags are spotted and sorted out. It was interesting to see how detailed the checks are.

We also visited the new allotments being built for the care home. They’ve been designed to be accessible all year round, with proper paths and layouts. It was great to see how construction can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Day 3 – Grenfell Research and Housebuilding

We started with a research task on the Grenfell fire. It was shocking to learn how flammable materials and poor safety checks led to such a huge tragedy. We talked about how new laws now make sure people are held accountable if something goes wrong.

Later, we visited a CALA site where new homes are being built. We saw how the process works, from laying foundations to installing utilities. It gave us a proper understanding of how houses are built and how important it is to follow the right steps.

Day 4 – Quality Checks and Progress Meetings

We learned about how engineers, consultants, and architects work together, and how their roles change depending on the company. We also looked at RAMS and Method Statement Checklists and tried to spot mistakes, like missing revision numbers or safety info. It was tricky but really useful.

We joined a meeting about progress on the allotments and church hall. It was interesting to hear how things move forward and what can cause delays. Later, we went back to the allotments to do a quality check, measuring benches and paths to make sure they matched the drawings. It showed us how important accuracy is in construction.

Day 5 – Estimating and Concrete Work

On our last day, we worked with maps and scale rulers to estimate material volumes. We learned how this helps figure out costs and how weight affects pricing. It was a good mix of maths and real-world application.

In the afternoon, we got hands-on with concrete mixing, spreading, and smoothing it out. We learned how to avoid bubbles and make sure the finish is right. It was a fun way to end the week and gave us a proper feel for the practical side of construction.

Final Thoughts

This week has been packed with learning and new experiences. We’ve seen how much goes into building safe, sustainable places and met loads of people who are passionate about what they do. If you’re thinking about doing work experience in construction, we’d definitely recommend it, just ask questions, get involved, and you’ll learn loads.

Camberley Manor Care Home Visit

We were recently invited to Camberley Manor Care Home to talk to residents, their families, and staff about the development. The visit was a wonderful opportunity to share updates, gather valuable insights, and connect with our neighbours at the care home.

The residents were keen to learn more about the development and engaged in conversations about the amenities being provided. We really value these interactions and appreciate the warm welcome and interest shown by everyone at Camberley Manor.

May construction update

19780_Skanska_Mindenhurst Construction Update May AW JH_V5.indd

May construction update

1. Works are continuing on the Loop Road and Brunswick Road (on the barracks) where the team has been busy installing drainage,
building the new road, and creating new footpaths.

2. We will start to remove the scaffolding around St. Barbara’s Church once the external refurbishment and redecoration
works are complete. The team will begin decorating the South facing wall once the scaffolding has been removed as this area
is not accessible whilst the scaffolding is in place. We will then reinstall the church spire.

3. We will begin to create new footpaths in the Central SANGs – inside the fence line – and the Blackdown ANGST. There may be additional traffic around the Officers Mess on Blackdown Road to deliver the materials needed.

4. Highways improvement works will commence on the DIO Roads (Newfoundland, Union, and Canada Roads). This includes laying the foundation of the road, installing new surface water drainage and creating new footpaths. We will keep you informed of any work taking place around your home.

🌳 Landscaping maintenance works will continue to the Village Green, Mindenhurst Road and the Central SANGS.

Mindenhurst Hops into Spring with Easter Events

On Wednesday 5 April the Mindenhurst project team and local residents came together to celebrate Easter – and the arrival of spring – on the Village Green. The event was a huge success with over 70 children taking part in the festivities.

This year’s Easter event offered a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy. It included Easter arts and crafts, a bunny themed scavenger hunt around the Village Green, and plenty of chocolate to share.

It’s the first community event of the year at Mindenhurst, the project team has already confirmed there will be more to come.

Niki Dufour, Community Relations Manager, at Skanska, said: “It was fantastic to see so many families taking part and coming together to celebrate Easter. It was lovely to meet so many people and to see the wonderful sense of community that is developing in Mindenhurst. We really enjoy hosting community activities and events and are looking forward to more events like this in the near future.”

Mindenhurst project team takes part in the Great British Spring Clean

On Thursday 23 March the Mindenhurst team took to the streets and parks around Mindenhurst and Deepcut in an effort to tidy up the local area.

It’s the third year the project team has joined in, this year’s team effort saw them collect 10 bags of rubbish.

The Great British Spring Clean is an annual campaign which aims to keep Britain tidy and improve local places. The nationwide campaign runs from 17 March to 2 April with community clear ups taking place up and down the country.

Now in its eighth year, the Great British Spring Clean is a feel-good, national effort to clean up public spaces for everyone to enjoy. The initiative aims to eliminate litter, improve the environment in local neighbourhoods and foster a sense of community among the #LitterHeroes that take part. It is an opportunity for people to come together and make a positive impact to their community and has positive benefits for both mental and physical health.

Local residents can still take part by borrowing litter pickers from the Skanska Project Office on Newfoundland Road. Anyone who is interested should get in touch with the team by emailing hello@mindenhurst.co.uk.

Leisliane Garcia, Development Director, at Skanska, said: “Our team enjoyed getting out and about around Mindenhurst to show support for Keep Britain Tidy’s campaign, it’s as important as ever to take care of our environment. We’d like to thank the residents who gave us suggestions of the places in need of some care and attention.”

Keep hedgehogs safe this bonfire night

hedgehog-in-grass-dark
Remember to keep hedgehogs safe on bonfire night

🍂 Don’t build your bonfire on a pile of leaves

🔥 Build your bonfire when you plan to light it, not the night before

🔦 Lift up parts of the bonfire with a stick and use a torch to look for animals before you light it

🦔 Listen carefully for the hissing sound that hedgehogs make when disturbed
